About Troop 31

Welcome to Troop 31

Troop 31 is a Scouts BSA troop in Austin, Texas, built around outdoor adventure, youth leadership, and a strong troop community. Scouts take an active role in planning and leading the program, learning new skills and gaining confidence along the way with support from experienced adult leaders. We welcome new Scouts and families at any experience level.

Our Philosophy (youth-led)

Troop 31 is a youth-led troop. Scouts take an active role in planning activities, leading meetings and campouts, and making decisions about their program. Older Scouts serve in leadership positions and help younger Scouts learn the skills they need to succeed.

Adults provide guidance, coaching, and support—but the goal is not to do the work for the Scouts. Whenever possible, Scouts are encouraged to communicate, solve problems, and take responsibility for their own Scouting experience.

Leadership is learned by doing. Scouts won't always get everything right the first time, and that's part of the program. With opportunities to try, make mistakes, adjust, and try again, they develop confidence and leadership skills that grow over time.

Leadership

Leadership opportunities are at the heart of the Troop 31 experience, with Scouts taking responsibility as adults provide guidance, mentorship, and support.

Scout Leadership

Troop 31's Scouts take on increasing leadership responsibilities as they gain experience. The Senior Patrol Leader and other youth leaders plan and run troop activities, while Patrol Leaders lead their individual patrols. Along the way, Scouts develop skills in communication, organization, teaching, and service.

Adult Leadership

Our Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters mentor and support the troop's youth leaders while providing the experience and oversight needed for a safe, successful program. Other registered adult volunteers support the many activities and behind-the-scenes needs of an active troop.

Our History

Origin

Troop 31 was first chartered in the 1930s at St. Martin's Lutheran Church. After a long, successful operation, membership began to dwindle because the population served by the church changed. No members of the troop re-registered for 2001, and it looked like the troop had died. Four months later the charter was moved to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church on Bee Cave Road. 14 Webelos signed on, and the troop was reborn. The troop chose the Phoenix.

The phoenix is a bird from ancient Greek, Egyptian and Arabian mythology that lived in Arabia and was sacred to/or a servant of the sun god of ancient Egypt. The phoenix is described as a heron in Egypt, but is usually depicted as a peacock or eagle-like bird with red and gold plumage. Only one phoenix could exist at one time and every 1000 years when it felt its end coming, the phoenix would build a nest to be used as a funeral pyre. The old phoenix would then be consumed in flames and burned to ashes. A new phoenix would then rise from the funeral pyre to reign in its place.
