Youth Protection Training

The Boy Scouts of America has taken many steps and initiated several policies to ensure the safety of our youth and to eliminate opportunities for abuse within the scouting program. Youth Protection Training (YPT) is an online course which teaches our adult leaders/members the strict policies on this subject. It serves to not only protect our youth from abuse in any form, but also to protect adults from false accusations. Troop 31 requires all registered adult members to complete Youth Protection Training. Upon completion of this training, an online certificate of completion is issued and the Capital Area Council records are updated.

Please provide a copy of the completion certificate to the Committee Chair so Troop 31 records can also be updated locally. This training is valid for 2 years and must be renewed at expiration.

Adult Training

The Scouting program is committed to ensuring quality training programs for all members of the scouting family both at the adult and youth levels. online training courses for adults have been developed by the BSA in order to provide ease of access to our registered adult leaders/members and provide a variety of subjects that help to prepare and protect everyone involved in scouting activities. All that is needed to access this free training is your member identification number (we can provide you with that information upon request), logging on to the BSA Online Learning Center, and a little time. For more information on the different training programs/requirements of the BSA, please refer to the Guide to Safe Scouting. A copy is available with the Troop or it can viewed online.

Weather Hazards Training: Troup 31 plans and participates in exciting outdoor adventures throughout the year and at varied locations. Being trained on how to plan, prepare and respond to hazardous weather conditions can make all the difference between having a great outdoor experience and having an experience that can ruin an event or even result in injury or death. For every scout-sponsored event, a minimum of one adult leader must have completed online Weather Hazards training. While the BSA policy does not require all adult leaders to complete this online training, Troop 31 does require it of all its adult leaders. This online course provides lots of useful information that can benefit everyone and while it is optional for our registered adult members, we strongly urge you to take this course. The training is valid for 2 years and must be renewed at expiration. Please provide a copy of the completion certificate (issued on line upon completing training) to the Committee Chair so Troop 31 records can also be updated locally.

Safe Swim Defense: Troop 31 at times plans outings that include swimming activities. The BSA requires that at each such event, a minimum of one adult leader must have completed Safe Swim Defense training. Troop 31 ensures that this minimum requirement is met at all times and is working towards ensuring that all of its adult leaders receive this online training. All of our registered adult members are also invited to take this online course. Please provide a copy of your commitment card (issued online upon completing training) to the Committee Chair so Troop 31 records can be
updated locally.

Safety Afloat: Various kinds of boating activities are sometimes included in our outdoor activities such as canoeing, kayaking, rafting and sailing to name a few. Safety Afloat was developed by the BSA to set standards for ensuring safe activity afloat. On all trips that include excursions on the water, the BSA requires all adult leaders participating to have completed Safety Afloat Training. All of our registered adult members are also invited to take this online course. Please provide a copy of your commitment card (issued online upon completing training) to the Committee Chair so Troop 31 records can be updated locally.
