About Troop 31

The troop was reorganized with Shepherd of the Hills as it's chartered organization in April 2001, with 14 then fifth graders who crossed over from Webelos. We now have 61 Scouts grouped into six patrols, including three New Scout patrols each of which has a Troop Guide and Junior Assistant Scoutmaster assigned to it, two Experienced Scout patrols made up of current sixth and seventh graders, and a Venture Patrol. We have one Eagle Scout and nine Life Scouts. We have Scouts in the troop who have been to the 2001 National Jamboree, Sea Base, and Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base. This summer a crew from the troop will go to Philmont. In 2005 we have two crews going Scuba diving at Sea Base and a contingent going to the European Jamboree, EuroJam 2005, in England.

NOTE: This section needs updating from 1995!

About our logo

The phoenix is a bird from ancient Greek, Egyptian and Arabian mythology that lived in Arabia and was sacred to or a servant of the sun god of ancient Egypt. The phoenix is described as a heron in Egypt, but is usually depicted as a peacock or eagle-like bird with red and gold plumage. Only one phoenix could exist at one time and every 1000 years when it felt its end coming the phoenix would build a nest to be used as a funeral pyre. The old phoenix is then consumed in flames and burned to ashes. A new phoenix would then rise from the funeral pyre.

Troop 31 was first chartered probably in the 1930s at St. Martin's Lutheran Church. After a long time of successful operation, membership began to dwindle probably because the population served by the church changed. No members of the troop re-registered for 2001, and it looked like the troop had died. Four months later the charter was moved to Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church, 14 Webelos signed on, and the troop was reborn. The troop chose the phoenix as its troop emblem about a year later.

If you wish to join Troop 31, all you need to do is come to a meeting with your parent or guardian, fill out an application and pay your annual dues. Troop 31's dues are $110 per year with Boy’s Life monthly magazine (encouraged) and $100 without.

We encourage all parents to be active in our scouting program. Parents are encouraged to register as adult leaders with BSA if you plan even a minimal level of participation in the troop. This costs $20 per year with Scouting magazine and $10 without. All parents are asked to make some time contribution to the troop during the year. There are many opportunities that parents can help out in planning individual activities, becoming a merit badge counselor for a specific merit badge or filling one of the adult leadership roles in the troop. Involved parents help keep the Troop's programs exciting and engaging and any contribution you are able to make is invaluable to the success of Troop 31.
